apprenticeships

The apprenticeship program here at enbi studio is a rigorous course modelled after my own experience of a traditional Japanese pottery apprenticeship. Applicants should be serious in their pursuits, reliable, and hard-working. More important than one’s previous experience in clay are aesthetic sensibility, devotion to the craft, and a deep desire to learn. A minimum one-year commitment is expected, which includes the initial three month trial period. A second year continuation option is encouraged for the appropriate candidate.

During the apprenticeship, the focus is on developing a strong skill set and learning an approach to clay that will serve one throughout one’s life. Apprentices are expected to help with all tasks at hand, with a give-and-take approach that benefits both student and teacher in turns.

The location of my studio is rural and remote, and a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. If you an especially social person, this will not be a good fit. The small community of Dixon is about 8 miles away, with Santa Fe and Taos each about an hour’s distance in opposite directions.

Apprentices receive a monthly stipend, and must otherwise be relatively self-sufficient, responsible for their own housing and living expenses exceeding the stipend amount. (A significant grant from Studio Potter is available every year for qualified applicants pursuing an apprenticeship.)

Responsibilities of the apprentice are wide-ranging, as are opportunities to learn about all aspects of life as a studio potter.

To be considered for an apprenticeship position, please submit:

1. A letter of intent, including proposed time frame for the apprenticeship.

2. A description of what you hope to gain during the apprenticeship. Give me an idea of your interests and dreams. Who/what are your influences (pottery and beyond)?

4. Two letters of reference with telephone numbers and/or emails.
